Janie Anderson Edwards

Our beloved Janie Evelyn Anderson Edwards quietly passed away on Monday, March 20, 2023 in the peace and comfort of her home.

On March 14, 1929 Janie A. Edwards was born in Mangohick, Virginia.  Was the fourth of nine children born to the late Samuel and Essie Anderson.  She recently celebrated her 94th birthday.

At the age of four Janie lived with her grandmother in New York City. Her education began from kindergarten to third grade. Back in Virginia there was no school bus. She rode with brother on “Pete” the mule to catch a bus to another county. Education was very important to her. She graduated from Union High School in Caroline County, VA June 1945. Janie attended Rappahannock Community College earning a Careers Studies Certificate for Instruction Aides and graduating “With Honors” in 1988.

On December 21, 1946 Janie married George T. Edwards, Sr. and to this union four children were born:  Cecelia, Celestine, Cheryl and George Jr. (Tommy).

Janie joined Third Union Baptist Church in 1951; was a Charter Member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 9501 (1990); loved playing dominoes and bingo.  Janie was the Matriarch of the Anderson clan organizing the first Family Reunion Committee in 1980.

Janie retired July 1994 after working in the King William School system for 27 years.

Janie enjoyed her many flowers, plants, and shrubbery.  She loved gardening--digging and planting--her hands in the dirt. Truly had a green thumb.

She is survived by four children: daughters: Cecelia Johnson (Herbert “Tim”), Celestine Wilson (Leo), Cheryl Montague (Riccardo), a son George T. Edwards, Jr.; a brother, Douglas Anderson (Sarah), a sister, Elaine Anderson; eight grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter. And her cat “Rusty” who was by her side for 14 years (2009).

The viewing was on Wednesday, March 29 from 5-7 p.m. at Third Union Baptist Church, 452 Walkerton Rd., King William, where the funeral service was on Thursday, March 30 at 11 a.m. Rev. W.D. Talley, Pastor. The interment was in the church cemetery.
